Smyrneiko & Rembetiko
Smyrneiko is the song from Asia Minor. In itself a unique mix of Eastern and European music, it was transformed into the Rembetiko style, which is nothing less than the core of Greek popular music, that being a group with bouzouki, baglamas, guitar and a singer. Moving lyrics cover all aspects of Greek life between the wars and during the refugee influx (1920-1939).

Two Nights with Tsitsanis
Two Nights with Tsitsanis
He is the musical genius that transformed the underground Rembetiko style into the Laiko (popular) style and managed to establish its musical form, orchestration and lyrics. Depending on the audience’s mood, he could play as long as he wished. He’d sing his own compositions and those of others, leap into off-beat solo improvisations, add lyrics and create new versions of his songs on the spur of a moment. A double album recorded live in the 1970's.

Vamvakaris - Payioumtzis - Papaioannou
Vamvakaris - Payioumtzis - Papaioannou
This is the typical Rembetiko band, bouzouki, baglama, guitar plus one or more singers. The album includes two live recordings, one with Vamvakaris & Payioumtzis, members of the band that established the Rembetiko style, and the last performance of Papaioannou, another rembetiko pioneer. Recorded in the 1960's and 70's when most of these songs were still censored, the album transmits the outlaw-ish atmosphere of such performances, at a time when Greece was under a military dictatorship.
